BRUSH UP YOUR LATIN
This group has been operating for three years and was kindly placed under the U3A umbrella a year or so ago. Having decided that we preferred spending money on ourselves rather than a tutor, we are self-taught and like this informal structure. Some are coming to the language for the first time and none are experienced. It doesn’t matter which you are, as there is something for everyone.
Using “Cambridge Latin Course Unit 1” we are familiarising ourselves with the basics, and enjoying reacquaintance with a simple book. “Amo, Amas, Amat” by Harry Mount is amusing, full of known Latin phrases and introduces Boris Johnson, an experienced classicist. One group member produces quotations for us to ponder from unimaginable sources each meeting. We visit Bignor Roman Villa shortly and will discover “Roman Britain” in Unit 2. We meet once a month at a home.
